Escambia's Online Auction a Big Hit So Far

For the first time in county history, the public tax certificate sale today will take place entirely on the Internet

Every year, in an attempt to collect unpaid property taxes, Escambia County auctions thousands of tax certificates.

It is usually a three-day affair that takes place at the old Escambia County Courthouse.

"It's your typical auction, with lots of hollering back and forth," Escambia County Tax Collector Janet Holley said. "You're up there trying to figure out who yelled out a bid first."

This year, Holley took a new approach - one that involved minimal shouting but drew a great deal of interest amoung investors.

For the first time in county history, the public tax certificate sale today will take place entirely on the Internet. Potential bidders had until Tuesday evening to register for the online auction and place deposits.
